We understand that having to make the decision to surrender a pet is a very difficult and emotional process in which the shelter is often the last resort.
We are here to help and free of judgment.
There is no fee to surrender a pet to HSMC but we do require an appointment; scheduling our intakes allows us to do the most for your pet by ensuring we have the adequate staffing, time and space to help your pet transition into the shelter. We most often cannot accommodate same day surrenders but do give special consideration to emergency situations.
There are a few things we’d like you to know ahead of time to make the process go smoothly.
- To surrender a pet you must be 18 years of age or older
- Persons surrendering a pet must have a photo ID and be a resident of Marathon County
- Animals are property and therefore the legal owner (or a POA) must be present
- We encourage you to bring familiar items that can stay with your pet and/or go home with them when they are adopted. This includes but is not limited to bedding, toys, food, etc.
- We will ask you to complete a behavioral profile at the time of surrender; this document is available to be emailed to you ahead of your appointment for completion.
The shelter is only a temporary place and our team of dedicated staff members and volunteers are committed to keeping your pet safe, comfortable and loved during their stay.
You can contact shelter staff at 715-845-2810 to start the surrender process today.
